This deep forest, covered in some 600 species of moss, was the inspiration for the film Princess Mononoke. Half a day there and back, Yakushima is also recommended for amateur trekkers.

One of the main attractions of Shiratani Unsuikyo is a part of the forest that served as the inspiration for that Studio Ghibli animated film Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke). Oga Kazuo, the lead artist for the film, spent lots of time here working on sketches for the movie's forests. The mountains of the film were further inspired by Akita Prefecture's Shirakami Sanchi Mountains.

Location:

Shiratani Unsuikyo is located 30 minutes from Miyanoura Port by car. There are infrequent buses from Miyanoura Port (35 minutes, 560 yen one way, one bus every 1-2 hours).

Opening hours :

Always open.

Admission

500 yen (300 yen with a discount coupon available at Yakisugi Land)

The panoramic spring at Morioka castle site park in #iwate. 🌸🌸

Morioka Castle was a beautiful 3-storey castle which served as the residence of the Nambu lords. 🏯🍂🍁

The castle was demolished in 1874. The site became desolate after the demolition, but it was revived in 1906 as Iwate Park; in 2006, the park was given a new nickname “Morioka Castle Site Park” to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

That's how it all started on the grounds where Morioka castle was once stood.

Though the original castle no longer stands today, the castle walls are well preserved and still intact, telling the story of Morioka's past. A total of 250 impressive sakura trees decorate the park, making the atmosphere incredibly romantic! 💑

There are 4 ways to reach this beautiful park: 🌸🌸

The majestic beauty of autumn leaves at Kimendai in Maniwa city, #Okayama prefecture. 🍂🍁

Hiruzen-Daisen Skyline or also known as the Kimendai Observatory Rest Spot is located in Maniwa City. From what I've been informed this special place is reachable via a pleasant drive in nature from Hiruzen-kogen Heights in Okayama Prefecture to Daisen in Tottori Prefecture.

The observatory deck offers visitors a full 360 degree scenic view of both Mount Hiruzen and Mount Daisen.
During autumn season, you can enjoy the beautiful colors of the distant mountains. Furthermore, due to the huge temperature differences, clouds are born in lower attitude. Amazing isn't it! ☁

Address: Kamifukuda, Hiruzen, Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture

Access:1 hr 20 min by bus from JR Chugoku-Katsuyama Station towards Hiruzen Kogen Highlands

Business Hours:

It is considered as a very popular photography spot to catch the city area engulfed in a sea of pretty clouds and the rising sun on Mount Daisen. ☀

I cannot recommend it highly enough as the autumn colors here are extremely beautiful indeed. Seeing is believing! 💞🍂🍂🍂

Aomori's amazing Nebuta Festival that will leave you joyful and wanting for more! 🎉🎎

Aomori is known for holding the Nebuta Festival from August 2nd till the 7th every year.
About 3 million tourists local and abroad flock into the prefecture to see massive Nebuta lantern floats depicting historical moments or mythical figures.

During the festival, over twenty dynamic nebutas – massive lanterns floats based on kabuki or mythical stories – parade through the city of Aomori. On the evenings of August 2nd through the 6th and daytime of the 7th, colorfully dressed Haneto (nebuta dancers) as well as flutists and drummers convey the nebuta floats through the city. On the night of the 7th, the nebutas are placed in boats and ferried around the Aomori Bay as fireworks light up the night sky to conclude the festival.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan in 1980.

Long freezing winter months are always followed by a blooming spring and flourishing summer. Summer festivals are a time to release one's hibernating energy and inner drive. I Iove summer festivals such as this and enjoy fireworks as well. Don't you just love those fireworks displayed in the  night sky! 🎆
Although it's been cancelled this year due to Covid-19, we'll see you again next year! That's a promise.
