Sendai Tanabata Festival - meaning the "7th evening". It is touted as one of the 3 major summer festivals in the Tohoku region. π
It is held in Sendai from August 6th till the 8th.
I must admit, this lavish festival draws over two million spectators each year. π
With the exception of this year of course, as it's been cancelled due to the pandemic as you'll already know by now. It is rather sad..
Local businesses in major shopping arcades would decorate their shop fronts by hanging colorful paper decorations, including 5-metre long gorgeous streamers on bamboo poles.
The sound of Japanese paper streamers flying in the wind, along with the noise of crowds, establishes a unique tanabata melody you can only hear in #Sendai.
*Note :
To prevent the spread of Covid-19, many events have been cancelled. Always check official sites before heading to an event or festival.
